Homenetmen of New York’s basketball team participated in the US Eastern Regional annual tournament, this year hosted by the NJ chapter. New York was represented by three teams in the over 19 division, two in the men’s division and 1 in the women’s. The two men’s teams did not have a strong showing and both teams were eliminated in the early rounds; the “white” team in the 2nd round of play while the “blue” team in the third round of play.

However our women’s team had a great tournament by winning the championship. The team was coached by Tony Moussati and for the first time in NY’s history a girls team won the championship. This year the team rolled over the opposition in the early rounds, defeating teams from Boston, Washington and Philadelphia by over 20 points.
In the final game New York faced Boston’s A team which they had defeated in earlier round by a 36-10 score. However this game seemed a lot harder from the beginning since Boston had added several players that were not part of the first game. New York struggled early but the half time score was only 12-10 in favor of Boston. In the second half coach Moussati applied a full court press which started causing Boston problems, however with 6 minutes remaining NY still trailed by four points. New York’s best three players suddenly started dominating the game and turned things around quickly. Malvia Shishmanian dominated the rebounds, Sarah Peltekian scored easy lay ups and Michelle Metchik’s three pointers started falling in. Final score was NY 38 Boston 23.
